It is therefore appropriate that the topic of this lecture should be essentially clinical. Moreover, it complements the excellent lecture given in this series by Dr. Derrick Brewerton.
It has always been the philosophy of the Rheumatism Research Unit at the University of Leeds that the thing which highly trained clinicians do best is clinical medicine, and that this is true both in a service commitment and in research. There are still many knots to be untied in the tangled skein of rheumatology at a clinical level, as well as in the more fundamental disciplines. It is without apology therefore that I discuss with you a topic which is almost wholly clinical.
